Doves - Jetstream
By Ben Hawling
Doves return this spring after a 3 year break with their forthcoming album, ‘Kingdom Of Rust’ which is said to be a sharp change in musical direction for the band. This can be heard in the first single to be offered primarily on download, ‘Jetstream’, which from the first listen appears to uphold the rumors surrounding the albums new sound. From the start, the electric tinged effects flow into the backbone of the piece, a driving rhythm that wouldn’t be out of place on a New Order track. The insecure vocals, provided by bassist Jez Williams, tell of loneliness and the feeling of being detached from reality, “People drift out of time, watching numbers turn ,it seems that I’ve been waiting here forever”, whilst the tune elevates towards a more pulsing beat, injecting gentle guitar melodies. This claustrophobic first single (influenced by the Vangelis film score for, ‘Blade Runner’) does show that the band have moved into a more diverse area of song writing, whilst retaining signature qualities which fans will recognize from Doves previous work. ‘Kingdom Of Rust’ is released on April 6th.
