Lights - Ellie Goulding

Spring has begun! As the sun rises and sprawls across the rooftops, and every day seems yellow; the true essence of the season settles in, with the perfect soundtrack. Just as Passion Pit worked their magic at the same time last year, Ellie Goulding and her glittering debut album 'Lights' has successfully burst through the clouds to warm our hearts.
Since winning the prestigious BBC Sound Of 2010 back in the winter, the pressure has been on the Hereford born singer songwriter to deliver something beautiful, and two months later Goulding releases a ray of sunshine.
'Lights' stands tall and strong; from pounding opener 'Guns And Horses', via sparkling single 'Starry Eyed', and throughout to mesmerizing closer 'Salt Skin'. Other glistening gems scattered around include 'Under The Sheets' and the tender soul drenched 'The Writer'. The albums brightest illumination however being 'Wish I Stayed', an anthemic diamond that leaps from this collection like an ecstatic Keane track stretching towards the sun.
Naysayers and doubters will label this work as samey, and may draw comparisons to contempories like Little Boots, but it appears that following this album, Goulding can do no wrong. With its darker undertones, 'Lights' does just as its title suggests, and fills the air with warmth and colour, with a hint of optimism that should not be ignored. Springtime has been born to shimmering synths, dueling harmonies and starry eyes. Time to step out of the shade..........
