Das Pop = Live At The O2 Academy Oxford, 25th February
By Ben Hawling
As lead singer Brent Van Looy, of indie pop band Das Pop, proclaimed at the end of their enchanting set, “the atmosphere tonight has been like soaring through the sky, like an eagle hungry for fish!” This sentiment, shared by the assorted collective of fans and pop lovers alike who were present at the intimate gig at the O2 Academy that night, was not far from the truth. From their opener, the achingly catchy tale of heartbreak, ‘Fool For Love’, right through to their chirpy single ‘Underground’, the band didn’t fail to raise a smile. This was enhanced further by their highly entertaining indie take on Frank Sinatra classic, ‘It Was A Very Good Year’ during their much appreciated encore. It is clear from this night that 2009 will be a big year for the Belgian band, (having already had their self titled debut, out 20th April, produced by indie dance legends Soulwax) and will definitely keep everybody dancing and smiling through any ounce of heartbreak this year!
