I don't do this often, probably because there rarely seems to be anything worthy of much credit in the current pop charts, but I just have to shine a light on Alicia Keys' new track, 'Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart'. This song surpasses all the shite out there, and with such grace.
For years, Alicia Keys' pop offerings have been particularly poor, weak, and boring. This has always been frustrating as she is clearly achingly talented, and could quite easily whip something glorious out of the bag, like her earlier hit 'Fallin'' for example.
Finally, she has done just that with 'Try Sleeping.....', a pure pop gem soaked in dreamy melancholy, with a jagged yet moving tone.
The lyrics seem to speak of heartbreak and longing for an ex lover, at its most scathing. The chorus itself highlights this mood, "So tonight, I'm gonna find a way to make it without you....I'm gonna hold on to the times that we had, tonight, I'm gonna make it without you." All potential sexual connotations aside, this refrain is dripping with emotion and pain.
The hugely atmospheric and mood setting tone is crafted beautifully here, with a slow and steady, pounding rhythm, laced with snarling syth's creating an ethereal quality to the overall melody.
Come on; this is fucking great, and it's from Alicia Keys!!
Somehow, 'Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart' works on both a melancholic level, and also manages to lift ones spirits. Thus, exactly what you want from a genuine pop song!
This track is essential!
