Day four of The Cheltenham Underground's now epic 'Decent Days And Nights' weekend acted as the perfect hangover cure, following neatly on from the euphoria and excesses of the Saturday.
Slak's doors welcomed in both music loving town's folk, and weary hardcore Underground weekenders, as a more relaxed show began to take form.
Hangover nursing, and memory swapping halted temporarily as the evenings first act, Alexander John held the stage. His gentle set of blues - folk swept around the room with a soothing charm, managing to not only quell even the most raging of head aches, but somehow reminding the crowd of exactly what The Cheltenham Underground is truly about; the appreciation of watching a talented and alternative artist perform in a local setting. Alexander John was just this; a pure treat and a talented musician displaying his well crafted work.
Next up were Underground regulars, Pollyloves who once again brightened everyone's night with a fine selection of acoustic melodic ballads, with the odd sparkling cover. This special duo seem to hold the room's attention whenever they play, and draw the crowd in through their graceful use of narrative lyrics gelled with delicate, yet dreamy guitar refrains. In many ways, the group's set marked a light an optimistic climax to the weekend as spirits were lifted, leaving the collective's heads in the clouds. Pollyloves; A definite Sunday night delight!
The final act of the four day weekend was the enchanting My First Tooth. This four piece from Northhampton brought together the energy, charm, intimacy, musicality and spirit of the entire Decent Days And Nights event through their indie folk pop, that left the viewing public wanting more. The relatively young band sounded hugely experienced, and performed with a tight precision, showing huge potential for any of their future releases. It is very important that you try and catch this twinkling gem of a band during their current UK tour!
So, as the last chord resonated through the densely packed Slak bar, and the last band packed away their instruments; a sense of melancholic reminiscence drifted through the minds of all who attended any, if not all of the gigs and events that had transpired over the last four days. Personal highlights and memories floated through the air, as tired eyes were wiped and dried. The concluding night of the Decent Days And Nights Weekend could not have been more appropriate and fitting; containing both the raw energy, and quaint instrumental talents of a variety of artists. In fact, Sunday night's festivities stood as a true testament to the very fabric of what The Cheltenham Underground is based upon, and harked back to the charming unique atmosphere that still exists in every night that John Madden and Dan Base put on in and around Cheltenham. This weekend not only proved that The Cheltenham Underground are at the peak of their powers, continuing to present well devised events, and deserve to be an even bigger local presence, but also that ultimately, the people of Cheltenham will always brave the weather, and set aside their personal differences, and appreciate the talent and expertise of a local talent. The Decent Days And Nights Weekend proved once and for all that what the town craves, and loves, is music in all it's forms. Bravo Cheltenham Underground!!
