New Rising, Phill King, Men Daimler @ Slak - Friday 16th April 2010

Friday night saw a burst of mid month energy from the doors of Slak, once again making the essential venue unavoidable for the now prominent Cheltenham Underground.
A lively Men Daimler kick started the evening delivering a stellar performance of his repertoire, so powerful in fact that it seemed to instantly turn heads and hold the rooms attention completely. Men Daimler's mix of epic sounding anthems, and darkly intimate ballads were played to perfection that night and left everyone with a warmth in their heart, and a smile on their face, including Men Daimler himself.
As the room began to fill with more music hungry locals, Bristol based singer songwriter Phil King took the stage with his own take on acoustic folk. As a performance, King's poetic lyrics and wonderfully soulful vocals proved to be a pleasure to hear. But unfortunately, this essence failed to settle comfortably in the night as a whole, in turn leaving many in the room anxiously waiting for the next act to re-build the initial energy.
The final act arrived shortly afterwards in the form of Guildford trio, Newrising. From the beginning of their set, the band captivated the now strong audience with a rich blend of reggae fuelled funk which gave the crowd the burst of energy they had been craving. Somehow, the band's sound tended to re- ignite the spring time atmosphere that had drifted into the room around the start of the evening, and sent the collective off with a smile.
This particular Cheltenham Underground night, like so many others, not only managed to show the town a host of fine talent, but also once again altered the mood of those in attendance to one of pure optimism and joy. Now that's an achievement.......
